SAFETY PRODUCT · YELLOW FIBERGLASS
Drop the cover over a live 750 V DC third rail, get back to the maintenance work you came to do
A high-visibility fiberglass safety shield placed over the conductor rail during a track possession or an emergency. Yellow means warning; fiberglass means insulation; one-person deployment means your O&M team does not wait on the schedule.

What the buyer is trying to solve
The use case is not theoretical.
The buyers who arrive here are trackworker safety officers, electrical isolation planners, and O&M team leaders who have to organize a maintenance possession or an emergency repair. The cover exists because the alternative is a full sub-station outage, an isolation certificate, a planned crew, and a window that may not align with the maintenance that has to be done. The cover turns some of that into a Yellow-Permit procedure and lets the work proceed.
Two pieces of context this product is part of
Yellow-Permit (or Permit-to-Work) procedure. Some operators allow a specific class of work to proceed on track with the third rail live, provided the rail is shielded by an approved safety cover for the duration. The cover has a published withstand voltage and a published mechanical retention; the permit to use it is the operator's, not ours.
Emergency response. Following a trespasser strike, an obstruction on the conductor rail, or a partial derailment, the cover can be deployed within minutes to give first responders a path under controlled isolation. We have supplied them for emergency tenders.
How the cover is used
One-person deployment, no tools required for placement.
Deployment is engineered around one assumption: the worker may be standing in a {{1.2}} m wide walkway, possibly in low light, possibly in rain, certainly under time pressure. The cover must work without thinking.
Verify and approach
Confirm the isolation permit. Approach the conductor rail from the running-rail side. Stand on the running-rail side, never the field side.
01
Pre-position
Carry the cover horizontally. Identify the section to be covered. Verify the cover's underside is clean and dry.
02
Lower into place
Hook the inner edge on the third-rail top edge first. Rotate the cover over the conductor rail. The clamp seats automatically.
03
Confirm and proceed
Confirm with the permit holder that the cover is in place. Begin the maintenance task. Cover remains in place for the duration of the work.
04
Removal
At the end of the task, lift the cover from the field side and remove. Inspect the cover for damage before redeployment.
05
When not to use this cover
Cases where the operator should not authorize the Yellow-Permit procedure.
Four conditions where this product should not be deployed
- Wet conditions with a compromised cover. A wet cover with a visible surface crack is no longer rated for {{750}} V DC isolation - withdraw and use traditional isolation.
- Outdoor third rail in freezing rain. Ice on the cover defeats the slip-resistant grip. Pull the cover and request a sub-station outage.
- Third-rail with unusual profile geometry not on the compatible list. The cover is rated for the conductor rail profiles below. For custom rail, request an engineered variant.
- Permanent shielding of a live conductor rail. This is a maintenance-time product, not a permanent cover. For permanent coverage of conductor rail in worker-access zones, see our permanent third-rail cover range or talk to your electrification engineer.

Customization & OEM
Operators typically buy the standard product. System integrators and electrification contractors sometimes want OEM-branded covers (your logo, your part number) for crew deployment. We also supply bespoke lengths for non-standard possession windows and interlock patterns for truck-bed storage. First article {{4}} weeks; repeat {{2}} weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cover approved for use on every metro system?
The cover is a piece of equipment, not a permit. Each operator decides whether the cover qualifies for Yellow-Permit (or Permit-to-Work) on their system. We supply test certificates (IEC 61235, ASTM G154, drop-test) that operators normally accept. We do not issue the operator's permit.
How long does deployment take?
One trained worker, about {{2}} minutes for the first cover on a section, less than a minute per subsequent cover. Deployment does not require tools; seating is automatic on the rail top edge.
How many deployments per cover?
{{500}}+ deployments before mandatory electrical retest; {{10}}-year service life under typical use. We supply a retest log sheet; record each deployment.
What if the cover gets wet during use?
Rated for {{2.5}} kV wet per IEC 61235. If the cover is submerged or visibly damaged by the wetting event, withdraw it and re-test before reuse.
Can the cover be left in place overnight?
Yes, provided the cover passes its pre-shift inspection. Many operators have a {{12}}-hour re-inspection protocol; we provide the inspection sheet.
Can it be walked on?
No. The cover is for shielding the conductor rail, not for crossing. If a walkway crossing is needed, use a separate certified walkway product.
What about freezing rain or ice?
Ice on the cover defeats both the slip-resistant top surface and the seating clip. Do not deploy. Request a sub-station outage.
How is the cover stored on the works vehicle?
The covers stack in a graduated ridge-and-groove interlock. We supply a stackable truck-bed rack; OEM variant available.
