TRACKSIDE ENCLOSURE · FIBERGLASS

A trackside equipment enclosure that does not get repainted, does not rust, and does not block your radio link

FRP housings for signals, point machines, axle counters, track-circuit JCs, and OCS relays. UV-stable across 30 years of trackside exposure, IP65 against weather, and RF-transparent at the bands your signaling system uses.

The buyers who arrive at this page

How they search, and the four things they actually want answered.
Searches that land here are typed by signaling & telecoms engineers, system integrators, and O&M procurement. Common queries: "FRP trackside cabinet", "fiberglass signaling enclosure", "RF-transparent trackside housing", "UV-stable trackside cabinet", "IP65 rail cabinet". Behind those queries sit four recurring problems.

Steel cabinets rust through under the ballast spray

Steel cabinets along track get peppered by ballast, brake dust, and standing water. Coating cycles (zinc, then paint, then more paint) eat the O&M budget. A fiberglass cabinet eliminates the coating cycle entirely.

01

The cabinet must not shield the radio link

Track-to-train communications, axle-counter telemetry, and GSM-R all rely on RF passing through the cabinet wall. FRP with proper resin and veil selection is RF-transparent; steel is not. We publish measured insertion loss at GSM-R and 5G NR bands.

02

Vandalism is part of the operating environment

Trackside cabinets are reached by people who should not be there. A composite enclosure can take a baseball bat, a thrown stone, or a thrown ballast stone without deformation that lets water in. We test to {{impact}} J pendulum impact; ask for the report.

03

The cabinet must hold IP65 even after ten summers

Sun, rain, frost, and UV age elastomeric gaskets faster than they age the cabinet. Specifying the gasket matters as much as the cabinet. We test gaskets to {{10}} years simulated UV; the enclosure warranty is structured separately from the gasket, so you know what is on the critical path.

Feature modules

Pick only what your trackside layout needs.
Enbuss enclosures are built up from standard modules so a single cabinet can host a point machine interface, an axle counter, and a trackside JC without three different OEM boxes. The cabinet you get is the cabinet you need - and spares for the next five cabinets are drawn from the same parts list.

UV-stable gelcoat

Isophthalic polyester or vinyl-ester gelcoat, UV-9 stabilizer. No chalking at 30 years in QUV testing.

A2 or A4 stainless hinges, latches, and fasteners. No plated steel.

Composite plinth

FRP plinth isolator raises the cabinet above ballast splash-line.

Bonded grounding bar

Copper bar bonded through composite wall via isolated gland; meets EMC and stray-current practice.

IP65 gasket set

EPDM or silicone gasket, choice of UV-stable formulations. Compression-tested after UV ageing.

Replaceable filter pack

GORE-style vent filter; breathes to IP65; replaceable without tools.

Document sleeve

In-cabinet A4 sleeve for the wiring diagram and the last test certificate.

Pre-cut mounting plate

FRP back plate machined to your hole pattern at the factory - no field drilling.

When not to specify this enclosure

Cases where a different material or product family is the right call.

Five cases where we will say no

  • The cabinet must survive direct vehicle impact. Trackside cabinets beyond the kinematic envelope sometimes get clipped. FRP is tough but it is not a crash-rated barrier - for that, we redirect you to a steel post and bracket assembly.
  • Your spec demands a stainless IP66 enclosure because of explosive atmospheres. FRP is not ATEX-rated by default. We have an ATEX variant - mention it on the RFQ and we will quote.
  • You need an RF-shielded cabinet by design. FRP does the opposite: it lets RF through. If your spec calls for shielding (e.g., secure compartment) we add an internal copper or steel liner.
  • You are working inside a third-party cabinet you already own. We retrofit internal liners and divider plates into other vendors' cabinets; we do not replace them wholesale when only one sub-assembly has failed.
  • You need walk-in shelter-class equipment housing. For multi-rack trackside shelters > 4 m² floor, the right answer is a precast concrete shelter with FRP lining; we partner on those, we do not sell them.

The CAPEX picture for FRP is rarely the lowest; the 20-year picture almost always is. The cost-of-ownership case matters in section 7 of the bid; bring the question to your account engineer early.

Customization & OEM

Most rail authorities buy standard enclosures with their hole pattern. System integrators often need OEM configuration: pre-cut back plates, branding, pre-installed DIN rails, terminal blocks to a customer-supplied wiring list. We support both: standard enclosures from stock through your distributor, OEM-configured through Enbuss with a 6-week lead time on first article.

Frequently asked questions

What cabinet sizes do you keep in stock?

We hold rolling stock of the four standard sizes above in grey RAL 7035. Other RALs and custom sizes are built to order in {{6}} weeks for first article and {{3}} weeks repeat.

Is the enclosure ATEX-rated?

Standard FRP enclosure is not ATEX-certified. The ATEX variant is available - specify on RFQ. We provide a separate datasheet with zone classification and certificate number per batch.

What is the warranty on the cabinet vs the gasket?

Cabinet body: 25 years against UV degradation and structural failure. Gasket: 10 years against IP65 retention - gaskets are field-replaceable, not warranty replacement. Splitting the warranty makes the real-life maintenance picture explicit.

How is the cabinet mounted to the sleeper / plinth?

Through-bolt to the FRP plinth with stainless hardware; the plinth itself anchors to the sleeper / concrete pad with chemical anchors specified for the substrate. We publish standard anchor patterns; custom patterns shipped with first article.

Does the cabinet interfere with track-circuit continuity?

No. Volume resistivity above 10⁸ Ω·cm; the cabinet does not create a track-circuit shunt path. We bond the cabinet ground through a defined point on the gland plate so stray current follows the engineered path, not the cabinet.

Can the cabinet be opened in a side wind on a track possession?

Yes. Door has a positive latch and a safety catch; the catch holds the door in the open position against typical trackside gusts. We have validated to {{110}} km/h gust - full report on request.

How are cable entries sealed?

Bottom-entry FRP gland plate with EMC cable glands sized to your cable OD. Standard gland range covers {{12–48}} mm OD; other sizes on request.

What documentation is included?

Per shipment: dimensional inspection, resin lot trace, RF insertion loss report, gasket ageing report, mounting drawing, as-built wiring (OEM configuration).
